How Attachment Styles Interact in Relationships
Your attachment style is only half the story in a relationship. Theirs is the other half.
Knowing your own attachment style tells you how you tend to behave in relationships. It doesn't tell you what happens when that style meets someone else's. An anxious partner paired with a secure partner will experience their anxiety very differently to an anxious partner paired with an avoidant one — same style, completely different relationship dynamic.
Attachment style is also not a compatibility verdict. Real people rarely fit neatly into one of four boxes — most of us carry a mix of secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized tendencies in different strengths. The pages below describe common patterns for each pairing so you can recognise what's happening and respond to it, not so you can diagnose a relationship as doomed or destined.

There are ten distinct pairings once you account for both partners' styles (an anxious-avoidant pairing is the same relationship dynamic whichever partner you list first). We're publishing a dedicated guide for each — starting with the combinations people ask about most.
